The right of occupation, or of the first occupant, is that which results from the actual, physical, real possession of a thing. I occupy a piece of land; the presumption is, that I am the proprietor, until the contrary is proved.

Civilized man refused to adapt himself to his environment; instead, he adapted his environment to suit him.

The territory is first of all the critical distance between two beings of the same species: Mark your distance. What is mine is first of all my distance; I possess only distances. Don't anybody touch me, I growl if anyone enters my territory, I put up placards. Critical distance is a relation based on matters of expression.

As archeologists have noted, the rectilinear subdivision of land appeared for the first time with the rise of sedentary societies whose main concern was twofold: to give a permanent form to their possession of land and to define a template for coexistence.
