There is a certain defect of urbanity in music, in that it spreads its influence further than is required (to the neighbourhood), according to the nature of its instruments, and thus, as it were, imposes itself, thus interfering with the freedom of others outside musical society; which the arts, which speak to the eyes, do not do, in that one may only turn one's eyes away if one does not want to let in their impression. It is almost the same with this as with the delight of a far-spreading odour. He who draws his perfumed handkerchief from his pocket traps all around and beside him against their will and compels them, if they want to breathe, to enjoy it at the same time; hence it has also gone out of fashion.
