This sequence thus demonstrates two significant functions of the central courtyard as a semi-private space in Iranian architecture.
1. The space is functionally different from the private space of the home (room). Strangers can enter and pass through the central courtyard if they know only one of the residents. Then, they too become a part of this “semiprivate” community.
2. The main difference between this space and public and semi-public spaces is that this space provides a sense of “safety” and privacy for its community members, such that they engage in their routine work regardless of the presence of others.
