Wagner proposes...to extend the melodic activity invested in aria to the entire composition...the role of the poet would be elevated; no longer confined to penning lyric outbursts, the poet could steer the libretto to its larger mythological task. In turn the extension of melody to its “endless” role throughout the dramatic work would give voice to some unspeakably expressive speech beyond language.
