The power of Dostoyevsky’s crystal palace metaphor for the philosophy of history is best measured when juxtaposed with Walter Benjamin’s interpretation of the Parisian arcades. The comparison is suggestive because in the one case as in the other an architectural form was proclaimed as the key for the capitalistic condition of the world.
